“Atabey” is the Taino mother earth spirit, holder of the moon and waters. She is worshiped as the supreme being of creation. Atabey is represented through freshwater and fertility. This spirit was one of the most important for the native tribes that inhabited the Caribbean.

Being Boricua with Taino ancestry, this piece holds a very spiritual connection for me. Taino’s still exist. They are in our blood, our language, our stories , our imagery, and of course our spirit!

Let Atabey guide and protect us, and continue to nurture our growth and love as we spread like the sea across this world.
